Sandals Resorts Tips and Tricks

Hi there, we’re Jonathan and Angela, founders of Rivage Travel and Sandals Chairman’s Royal Club Diamond Elite advisors.

Sandals Resorts Tips and Tricks

In 2024, we were honored by Sandals as their Top US Agency, and for 15+ years, we’ve been specializing in Sandals resorts, helping thousands of couples plan unforgettable honeymoons, anniversaries, destination weddings, and just-because getaways.

If you’re getting ready for your first Sandals vacation or if this is the first time at a specific resort, you probably have a few questions, such as...

  • What should I pack?

  • Is Club MoBay worth it?

  • How does tipping work

  • Do I really need to book dinner reservations on Day 1?

We’ve got answers, and so much more.

This is the advice we share with our clients every day, based on firsthand experience, real guest feedback, and behind-the-scenes insights that only come from working directly with Sandals.

You’ll find smart travel hacks, what to expect before and after you arrive, etiquette that’ll help you feel like a seasoned pro, and our top tips for four of the most popular Sandals resorts:

Let’s make sure your trip is as luxurious, well-planned, and relaxing as it should be.

Ready? Let’s dive in.

Sandals Resorts Tips and Tricks

Sandals Vacation Checklist: What to Pack and Prepare

Packing for a Sandals vacation isn’t complicated, but it is different than your typical beach getaway. Because while you’ll be sipping cocktails poolside and strolling barefoot on the sand, you’ll also want to be prepared for fine dining, excursions, spa days, and even a surprise proposal or celebration.

Here’s how to pack smart so you can relax from day one.

Travel Essentials for the Caribbean

1. Passport Validity: Don’t Get Turned Around at the Airport

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date; this is a strict rule for all Sandals destinations. While some countries may have exceptions to this rule, it’s possible you could be turned away at the airport check-in over this.

Double-check now and renew early if needed.

2. Packing for the Beach, Excursions, & Dining

Sandals vacations are about options, you’ll go from beachwear during the day to elegant dinners at night.

Make sure you bring:

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing for hot, humid weather

  • Multiple swimsuits (at least 2–3)

  • Cover-ups and sandals for walking around the resort

  • Activewear if you plan on hiking, playing tennis, or using the gym

  • A pair of water shoes or sturdy sandals for excursions like waterfalls or catamarans

  • Dressier outfits for “resort evening” restaurants (more on that soon)

Pro Tip: We always pack a change of clothes and swimwear in our carry-on. That way, even if your room isn’t ready, you can still hit the pool or grab lunch while you wait.

3. Sunscreen, Bug Spray & Reef-Safe Items

We always tell clients: don’t skimp on sun protection. The Caribbean sun is strong, even on overcast days. Pack a high-SPF reef-safe sunscreen (oxybenzone-free), a hat, and after-sun lotion just in case.

For bug spray, especially if you're headed to Jamaica or St. Lucia, bring a DEET-free option that's skin-safe but still effective. Most of the resorts fog for mosquitoes, but it’s better to be prepared, especially around dusk.

If you get bitten, bring a stick of After Bite to stop the itching. Us and our kids never travel without these. They’re inexpensive and they work!

Bonus Items That Always Come in Handy:

  • A reusable insulated tumbler (keeps drinks cold at the beach)

  • Travel-size laundry detergent or wet bag for swimsuits

  • Waterproof phone pouch for beach/pool days

  • Portable fan (trust us)

  • Power bank for your phone

  • Snorkel gear if you prefer your own (Sandals provides gear too)

  • Scuba Diving? Bring your mask, snorkel, and fins. They have high-quality regulators and BCD’s.

4. Pack for a Purpose

The Sandals Foundation's "Pack for a Purpose" program is an initiative that allows travelers to make a meaningful impact on the Caribbean communities they visit. Through this program, guests are encouraged to bring up to 5 pounds of much-needed school supplies, medical items, or other essentials in their luggage when traveling to any Sandals or Beaches resort.

Here’s a quick overview:

  • 🎒 What It Is: A volunteer tourism effort where guests pack supplies to donate to local schools, clinics, and community organizations.

  • ✈️ How It Works: Travelers review a list of requested items (available on the Sandals Foundation or Pack for a Purpose website), pack a few in their suitcase, and drop them off at the resort upon arrival.

  • 📚 Who It Helps: Children, families, and healthcare facilities across the Caribbean that benefit from additional resources they may not otherwise access.

  • ❤️ Why It Matters: It’s an easy yet impactful way for travelers to give back, supporting education, healthcare, and community development in a region that gives so much to its visitors.

It’s a small gesture that can create lasting change, and it fits perfectly into your suitcase and your vacation. 🙂

What’s Included at Sandals, And What’s Not

One of the biggest perks of staying at Sandals is how truly all-inclusive it is, but there are a few things you’ll want to budget or plan ahead for. Here's what you can expect:

What’s Included in Every Stay:

  • Unlimited land and water sports, including snorkeling, paddleboarding, kayaking, and even scuba diving (certified divers dive for free!)

  • All meals, snacks, and premium drinks, yes, even top-shelf liquor and gourmet dining are included.

  • Airport transfers, round-trip, no extra cost

  • Daily entertainment and live shows

  • Access to all pools, beaches, and fitness centers

  • Taxes and gratuities for most staff

From experience, this level of inclusivity is what makes Sandals stand out from the rest; you’re never reaching for your wallet, and there are no surprise bills at check-out.

What’s Not Included (but worth considering):

  • Red Lane® Spa services, couples massages, facials, etc., are an additional charge

  • Private candlelight dinners on the beach, incredibly romantic, but not part of the standard package

  • Off-site excursions, such as zip-lining, catamaran cruises, or local tours, are extra (though many are well worth it!)

  • Butler & Spa gratuities are the two exceptions to the no-tipping policy.

💵 Do I Need Cash?

You won’t need cash at the resort, but we always recommend bringing some small USD bills for:

  • Tipping your butler or spa therapist

  • Your driver if you book a private transfer

  • Tips on off-resort excursions

  • Souvenirs or snacks at the airport

There are ATMs around the resorts, but they can charge high fees, so it's easier to bring what you'll need in advance. If needed, you can get limited amounts of cash from the front desk using your card on file.

Sandals Dress Code & Etiquette Guide

Resort Casual vs. Resort Evening: What It Really Means

This confuses a lot of first-timers, so here’s the simple breakdown:

  • Resort Casual: Daytime wear, think shorts, T-shirts, sundresses, swimwear with a cover-up for breakfast or lunch.

  • Resort Evening: Required at select restaurants. Men should wear long pants, collared shirts, and closed-toe shoes. Women should aim for a dress or a nice blouse with a skirt/pants. Beach flip-flops and tank tops are not acceptable.

Tip from us: Bring at least one or two nicer outfits, even if you’re not big on dressing up. Some of the best restaurants (like Butch’s or French-style dining) enforce evening dress codes, and you don’t want to miss out.

🙏 Etiquette Tips That’ll Make You Feel Like a Pro

  • Reserving chairs: Avoid “chair hogging” by leaving personal items on a lounger all day, unless you’re using a butler who will reserve for you.

  • Butler etiquette: Butlers go above and beyond, and tipping them is not only allowed but appreciated. Most couples tip between $20–40/day depending on the level of service.

  • Respecting privacy: Sandals attracts honeymooners and couples celebrating milestones. Be mindful of private beach dinners, spa areas, and cabana zones.

Insider Travel Tips: Flights, Airports, and Transfers

Getting to paradise should feel like part of the vacation, not a hassle. These are the travel tips we give all our clients before they fly, especially if they’re headed to the Caribbean for the first time.

When to Arrive & How to Choose Flights

Arriving early matters. If possible, book a flight that lands before 2 PM. Here's why:

  • You’ll get the full value of your first day, more time to enjoy the beach, have lunch, and start relaxing

  • Afternoon and evening flights increase the risk of delays, missed transfers, or skipped dinner reservations

  • Resorts typically begin check-in at 3 PM, but early arrivals can still enjoy full access to restaurants, pools, and beaches while your room is prepared. Going to Sandals Royal Bahamian? They are rolling out a program that offers an early check-in. Contact us for more information!

Late-night arrivals = one paid night, mostly used on getting there. Trust us, it’s worth the early alarm to make the most of Day 1!

🛂 Should I Get Club MoBay / VIP Fast Track?

For travelers flying into Montego Bay (MBJ) in Jamaica, we strongly recommend booking Club MoBay, especially if you’re arriving midday or on a weekend.

With Club MoBay, you'll get:

  • A fast-track escort through immigration and customs (sometimes skipping a 60-90-minute wait)

  • Access to a comfortable arrivals lounge with drinks, snacks, and AC while your transfer is arranged

  • Priority departure lounge with drinks, Wi-Fi, and snacks on your way home

This small upgrade makes a huge difference, especially after a long flight.

Transfers: What You Need to Know

🚐 Standard vs. Private Transfers

All Sandals bookings include complimentary round-trip transfers to and from the airport. The type of transfer depends on your room category and resort:

  • Luxury & Club Level guests typically ride in air-conditioned shared shuttles

  • Butler guests often receive private luxury transfers with refreshments and fewer stops

If you’re celebrating something special or just want a smoother ride, private transfers can also be booked in advance, especially helpful for longer routes like Sandals Grande St. Lucian, which is a scenic (but winding) 90-minute drive from UVF.

🔁 Inter-Resort Shuttles: Can I Visit Other Sandals?

Yes, some resorts offer complimentary shuttles between sister properties. For example:

  • Sandals Montego Bay ↔ Sandals Royal Caribbean

  • Sandals Halcyon ↔ Sandals La Toc ↔ Sandals Grande St. Lucian

This lets you dine, explore, or enjoy a different vibe, all while staying at your home resort. Just check shuttle times and availability at the front desk or with your butler.

What Happens at Check-In?

Online Check-In Saves Time:

Before you arrive, Sandals offers a simple online check-in portal where you can:

  • Upload your travel documents

  • Share arrival flight details

  • Submit any preferences or celebrations

  • Avoid long wait times at the front desk

We always complete this for our clients as part of our service, it’s one of those behind-the-scenes details that make your vacation start smoother.

🥂 Butler Guests Get VIP Treatment

If you’ve booked a Butler Suite, you’ll be greeted with a glass of bubbly and a personal escort straight to your suite. No lines, no waiting. Your butler will take care of everything, from unpacking to dinner reservations.

Sandals Resorts Tips and Tricks

At the Resort: Tips to Maximize Every Day of Your Stay

Once you’ve checked in and that first frozen drink hits your hand, it’s easy to slip into full vacation mode. But a few smart moves in your first 24 hours can truly elevate your stay, from scoring the best dinner reservations to claiming the perfect pool lounger.

Must-Do Activities & Can’t-Miss Inclusions

🤿 Scuba, Snorkeling & Water Sports

Here’s one of the best-kept secrets: certified scuba divers dive for free, every day, up to two tanks. That alone can be worth hundreds if you were paying out of pocket. Even if you’re not certified, you can take a short resort course and still get in the water.

All Sandals resorts also include:

  • PADI Scuba Diving and Snorkeling trips (equipment included)

  • Kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, Hobie Cats

  • Water trikes, aqua bikes, and pool games

Don’t wait until Day 3 to try them, go early before the daily schedule fills up.

🌴 Local Excursions Worth Booking Early

While everything inside the resort is included, off-site excursions are extra, and often fill up fast.

A few of our favorites across different islands:

  • Mud baths and waterfalls in St. Lucia

  • Private sandbar visits in the Exumas

  • Luminous Lagoon tour in Jamaica

Pro tip: If you're traveling during peak season or for a honeymoon, book these in advance or as soon as you arrive through Island Routes (the official excursion partner).

🪑 Pool vs. Beach Chairs: How to Find Your Spot

Here’s the truth: the best lounge chairs go fast. If you’re not in a Butler suite, get to the pool or beach before 8 AM to claim your favorite spot.

But if you are in a Butler-level room, your butler can reserve premium chairs with towels, drinks, and snacks set up for you daily. Just let them know your preferences, shade vs. sun, pool vs. beach, and they’ll take care of the rest.

Food & Drink Secrets at Sandals

🍽️ Which Restaurants Need Reservations?

Not all restaurants require them, but the most popular ones do. These vary by resort, but usually include:

  • Butch’s Steakhouse

  • Kimonos (hibachi-style)

  • Le Jardinier or other fine dining options

Make these reservations as soon as you arrive, or better yet, let your butler or Club concierge handle it. Wait too long, and you may get stuck with less desirable dining times (or miss out altogether).

Travel Tip: Make your first dinner reservation 14 days prior to your arrival inside the Sandals app.

🦞 Lobster Nights, Private Dinners & Room Service Hacks

  • Lobster is seasonal, but when in season (Aug 1–Mar 31), many resorts offer it on special nights, ask your concierge or butler when it’s available

  • Private beach dinners are not included, but are incredibly romantic for honeymoons or proposals, book early!

  • Room service is only included in Club and Butler level rooms, Luxury level rooms don’t include this perk

Pro Tip: Order your breakfast via room service on the day you have an early excursion; it’s one of the best ways to fuel up without rushing to a restaurant.

🥃 Do All Bars Serve Top-Shelf Liquor?

Yes, but the selection varies by bar. Premium spirits like Appleton Estate, Bombay Sapphire, Tito’s Vodka, and Crown Royal are standard, but you may need to ask for them by name.

In Butler rooms, you can request specific bottles for your in-room bar setup. Don’t be shy, if you prefer Johnnie Walker Black over Glenfiddich, say so.

Using the Sandals App & Loyalty Program

📲 GINA: Your In-App Concierge

Sandals’ mobile app includes GINA, a virtual concierge who can help with requests, updates, and even feedback during your stay. It's especially helpful for non-Butler guests looking to schedule dining, activities, or housekeeping.

Pro tip: Download the app before your trip and use it to preview restaurant menus, activity schedules, and resort maps.

🎁 Sandals Select Rewards: Why to Sign Up Onsite

If you’re loving your trip (and we’re betting you will), stop by the Loyalty & Travel Desk before you leave. Here’s why:

  • You’ll get up to 12% off your next Sandals stay

  • It locks in your future trip even if you’re not ready to choose dates yet

  • You’ll start earning Sandals Select Points, which can be used toward spa, excursions, and gift shop purchases later on.

  • At 70 nights, you receive a free week!

And yes, even if you already booked with us, we’ll make sure you still get every perk and promo available. It’s one of the many things we handle behind the scenes to keep your trip stress-free.

Sandals Resorts Tips and Tricks

5 Must-Know Tips for Sandals St. Vincent

Sandals St. Vincent is the newest gem in the Sandals collection, and in our experience, it’s one of the most serene and scenic resorts they’ve ever built. Nestled between rainforest and reef, this destination is perfect for couples who want something undiscovered, luxurious, and connected to nature.

Here are five insider tips to make the most of your first visit:

1. Butler Guests Enjoy Exclusive Water Transfers

One of the coolest (and most convenient) perks at Sandals St. Vincent? If you’re staying in a Butler-level suite, your transfer from the airport may not involve a car at all.

Instead, you’ll be whisked away via private water transfer, gliding along the coast, watching the island unfold from the sea. It’s not just about skipping traffic; it’s about arriving in style. Be sure to have your camera ready.

Tip: Let us know in advance if you’re prone to motion sickness. We’ll help you plan accordingly.

2. Book Dinner at Buccan As Soon As You Arrive

Buccan is the signature open-fire grill restaurant at Sandals St. Vincent, and it's quickly becoming one of the most talked-about dining experiences in the entire brand.

With limited seating and dishes like slow-grilled Caribbean seafood and ember-roasted vegetables, it fills up fast. Make a reservation on Day 1, or let your butler or concierge book it for you. You’ll thank us later.

3. Check Out the In-Suite Fitness Rooms

This is the first Sandals resort to offer in-room fitness studios in select suites. If staying active is part of your lifestyle, even on vacation, you’ll love having a private space for yoga, strength training, or a quick morning Peloton ride before breakfast.

These rooms are limited, so let us know early if this is a priority. They go quickly, especially with wellness-focused travelers.

4. Best Sunset Views & Snorkeling Are in the Same Spot

Here’s something we learned firsthand: the western side of the resort offers front-row sunset views and amazing snorkeling just steps from the sand.

Ask for rooms or beach chairs facing Young Island Cut, where the water stays calm and clear in the afternoons. It’s an incredible spot for underwater photography or a peaceful float.

Bonus: This area is also great for seeing the “green flash” at sunset, a rare optical phenomenon worth watching for.

5. Explore Nearby Islands Like Bequia and Mopion

If you’re feeling adventurous, St. Vincent is a launchpad for some of the Caribbean’s most beautiful, lesser-known islands. Day trips to Bequia, Mustique, or the tiny sandbar of Mopion are available through Island Routes, and they’re unlike anything you’ll experience at other Sandals resorts.

We recommend these excursions for return guests, adventurous couples, or anyone wanting a truly Instagram-worthy memory away from the resort.

5 Insider Tips for Sandals Grande St. Lucian

If you’re dreaming of a postcard-perfect Caribbean backdrop, turquoise waters, the iconic Pitons, and palm-lined beaches, Sandals Grande St. Lucian delivers on all fronts. It’s one of the most scenic and activity-rich properties in the brand, and it’s where we send clients who want the best of adventure, luxury, and unbeatable views.

Here are five expert tips to help you maximize your stay:

1. See the Pitons by Helicopter or Catamaran

Everyone wants that epic photo of the St. Lucia Pitons, but here's the thing: you won’t see them from the beach at Grande St. Lucian. To truly take them in, you need to get out on the water or up in the air.

  • For a luxurious experience, book a helicopter tour (highly recommended for proposals or anniversaries)

  • For a laid-back vibe, opt for the Sunset Piton Catamaran Cruise, which often includes snorkeling, music, and an open bar

We help clients reserve these in advance to guarantee the best departure times (and avoid the midday heat!).

2. Use Exchange Privileges with Halcyon & La Toc

One of the best perks at Grande St. Lucian is the “Stay at 1, Play at 3” program. You’ll have full access to Sandals Halcyon Beach and Sandals Regency La Toc, including:

  • All restaurants (we love Kelly’s Dockside at Halcyon)

  • Pools and beaches

  • Transportation between resorts, included for free

Each resort has a different vibe, so if you're staying more than 4–5 nights, this is a fun way to explore without switching hotels.

3. Pre-Book the Sulphur Springs Excursion (But Pack Accordingly)

The drive-in volcano and Sulphur Springs mud bath is one of the most popular excursions in all of St. Lucia, and totally worth it. That said, we have a few words of warning:

  • The mud can stain light-colored swimwear, especially white or pastel

  • Wear a dark, older suit and bring a bag for your muddy clothes

  • Be sure to book early, this trip fills up fast, especially mid-week

You’ll return relaxed, glowing, and maybe a little messy. Totally worth it.

4. Consider the Helicopter Transfer from the Airport

The drive from Hewanorra Airport (UVF) to Grande St. Lucian is beautiful, but long. You’re looking at 75 to 90 minutes, and the roads can be curvy.

Want to start your trip in style (and shave off travel time)? Book a helicopter transfer from UVF to the north of the island. It’s about 15 minutes of jaw-dropping aerial views, and you’ll arrive feeling like a VIP.

Let us handle the coordination, this is one of our favorite upgrades to surprise honeymooners with.

5. Choose Your Swim-Up Suite Carefully

Swim-up rooms are incredibly popular at Sandals Grande St. Lucian, but not all offer the same level of privacy.

Here’s what to know:

  • Some face high-traffic walkways (more convenient, but less private)

  • Others are tucked into quiet corners with more secluded patios

  • Higher-tier suites tend to have Tranquility Soaking Tubs™ and larger lounging areas

We’ve walked every suite at this resort and can guide you to the one that fits your style, whether that’s social and central or quiet and romantic.

5 Pro Tips for Sandals South Coast Jamaica

Set on a two-mile stretch of private beach in a protected nature reserve, Sandals South Coast is one of the most laid-back and breathtaking resorts in Jamaica. It’s ideal for couples who want quiet luxury, wide-open views, and a touch of “off the beaten path” romance.

Here are our top insider tips to make your stay even more magical:

1. Overwater Bungalows: Privacy vs. Proximity Trade-Offs

South Coast is home to one of Sandals’ most exclusive offerings: the overwater bungalows arranged in a heart-shaped pier. These are next-level luxury with private decks, glass floors, soaking tubs, and direct ladder access to the sea.

But not all overwater villas are created equal. Here’s what to know:

  • Outer-edge bungalows offer more seclusion and panoramic views, but require a longer walk to shore

  • Inner bungalows are closer to land, which makes access easier, but with slightly less privacy

While the specific bungalow cannot be selected at the time of booking, whether it’s a quicker walk for spa appointments or a full-on “nobody can see me” ocean escape, we’ll advocate with the management teams to help get the one you want the most!

2. Pair a Red Lane Spa Experience With a Cabana Day

If your version of paradise involves total relaxation, book a cabana day right after a couples massage at Red Lane Spa. Here’s how to plan the perfect chill combo:

  • Morning massage at the spa (book early, slots go fast)

  • Lunch delivered to your private beach cabana

  • Nap, read, or sip champagne while your beach butler refreshes drinks

This pairing is especially great for honeymooners or anyone who wants a zero-stress day with no crowds.

3. Travel Tip: South Coast Is a Long Transfer, Arrive Early

Unlike Sandals Montego Bay or Royal Caribbean, South Coast is tucked away on Jamaica’s southern shore, about 75 minutes from MBJ. The drive is scenic on a newly paved highway.

Here’s our best advice:

  • Book flights that arrive before 1 PM if possible

  • Let us arrange a private transfer for added comfort and fewer stops

  • Grab a snack at the Sandals arrival lounge

Trust us, an early afternoon arrival is better than a late-night arrival, especially after a long travel day. Get in early and start enjoying the sunset from your balcony instead of the backseat of a van.

4. Butler Guests Can Reserve the Best Beach Chairs Early

If you’re staying in a Butler suite, you’ve got one of the biggest perks on the resort: access to the best beachfront loungers before anyone else.

Want that shaded poolside cabana with direct ocean breeze and drink service? Your butler can secure it daily, often before sunrise.

Just tell them your preferences (shade vs. sun, pool vs. beach), and they’ll handle the rest, towels fluffed, drinks iced, and snacks delivered like clockwork.

5. Don’t Miss the Included Catamaran Sail

One of our favorite free activities at South Coast is the catamaran cruise. It’s scenic, relaxing, and includes:

  • An open bar

  • Music and dancing

  • Incredible views of the coastline at golden hour

It’s included in your stay, but space is limited, so reserve your spot at the activities desk as soon as you arrive, or let your butler book it for you.

Sandals Resorts Tips and Tricks

5 Key Tips for Sandals Ochi

Sandals Ochi is the most versatile resort in the Sandals portfolio. With over 500 rooms, 16 restaurants, 11 bars, and 105 pools, it’s practically a Caribbean city unto itself. Whether you’re here for luxury, value, or non-stop energy, there’s a side of Ochi that’s perfect for you, as long as you know how to navigate it.

Here are five pro tips to help you make the most of this expansive property:

1. This Resort Is Huge, Use the Shuttle to Navigate

Ochi is divided into two main sections:

  • The Seaside Village, home to the beach, pool bars, and daily activity hubs

  • The Hillside Butler Village, tucked into the lush greenery with villas, pools, and a quieter atmosphere

You’ll need to use the resort shuttle to get between them, especially if you're staying hillside. The shuttle runs every few minutes and is super easy to use, but don’t underestimate how big this place is. Plan a little buffer time when going to dinner or excursions.

2. Best Budget-Friendly Butler Rooms Are Found Here

Want the Butler experience without the overwater villa price tag? Sandals Ochi has some of the most affordable Butler suites in the entire brand.

Our favorites:

  • Riviera Beachfront One Bedroom Butler Suites – steps from the water

  • Hillside Pool Villas – private plunge pools and lush seclusion

You’ll get all the signature perks: room service, reserved chairs, private check-in, and a dedicated butler, for a fraction of the price you’d pay at other resorts.

We’ve helped many couples upgrade to Butler Level at Ochi without blowing their budget, and they always say it’s a game-changer.

3. Great for Social Travelers, Ochi Has the Best Nightlife

If you’re looking for energy, entertainment, and new friends, this is your place. Sandals Ochi has the liveliest social scene in the brand, including:

  • A beach party almost every night

  • Themed events (white night, chocolate night, Caribbean carnival)

  • Live music, DJs, and dance floors that stay open late

Perfect for extroverts, friend groups, or couples who want something more upbeat than the ultra-quiet, romantic vibe of smaller resorts.

4. Opt for the Hillside If You Want Quiet + Luxury

On the flip side, the Hillside Butler Village is a peaceful retreat. It’s nestled in the rainforest, dotted with private villas and semi-private pools, ideal if you want seclusion.

  • Fewer crowds

  • More mature, romantic atmosphere

  • Great for anniversaries or downtime after a busy wedding week

Just keep in mind: you’ll need to shuttle or walk downhill to get to the beach and most restaurants. But many of our clients say the tranquility is well worth it.

5. Don’t Miss the Speakeasy Bar: The Rabbit Hole

This is hands-down one of our favorite hidden gems in any Sandals resort. The Rabbit Hole is a true speakeasy, complete with a nightly password (ask your concierge or butler), vintage cocktails, and live jazz or blues.

It’s cozy, atmospheric, and perfect for date night, or a memorable nightcap before heading back to your suite.

Dress code leans upscale here, so bring a nice outfit and lean into the vibe.

Sandals Resorts Tips and Tricks

Your Sandals Vacation, Elevated

There’s something special about Sandals that’s hard to put into words until you’ve experienced it for yourself. It’s not just the turquoise water, the gourmet dining, or even the romantic atmosphere. It’s the feeling of showing up and knowing that everything has been taken care of.

But here’s the thing: even a vacation as easy as Sandals can go sideways if you don’t know what to expect.

We’ve seen first-time guests:

  • Fly in late and miss out on the first night's activities

  • Skip restaurant reservations

  • Book the wrong room category for their lifestyle or preferences

  • Miss out on specials or upgrades they didn’t even know existed

That’s why we do what we do.

As Sandals Chairman’s Royal Club Diamond Elite advisors, we’ve personally visited every Sandals resort, built relationships with resort staff, and helped thousands of couples plan stress-free, unforgettable vacations. And the best part? We don’t charge a planning fee—ever.

From choosing the right resort and room to timing flights and arranging excursions, we handle the details so you can focus on what matters: being present, relaxing, and celebrating love.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sandals Resorts

Can I Drink the Water?

Yes, you can safely drink the water at all Sandals Resorts. It’s purified and filtered, just like you’d find in a luxury hotel back home. That said, many guests prefer bottled water for taste, and it’s always readily available in your room, at the bars, and on excursions.

Pro tip: If you’re planning an off-site adventure, bring a couple of sealed bottles with you just in case.

Are There Mosquitoes? Should I Bring Bug Spray?

Most Sandals resorts fog regularly using non-chemical ingredients and do a good job minimizing pests, but yes, mosquitoes can still be an issue, especially after sunset or near lush gardens and water features.

We always suggest packing:

  • A DEET-free bug spray or mosquito wipes (gentler on your skin)

  • After-bite cream just in case

  • Long-sleeve linen or light layers if you’re sensitive

This is especially relevant in Jamaica and St. Lucia, where the tropical climate and nearby forests create ideal conditions for mosquitoes.

Do All Rooms Have Blackout Curtains?

Most, but not all, rooms at Sandals resorts include blackout curtains or very heavy drapes. However, some upgraded room categories (like villas or swim-ups with oversized windows) may not offer complete blackout coverage.

If you’re light-sensitive and want full darkness for sleep, we recommend:

  • Bringing a sleep mask

  • Letting us know your preference when booking, we can advise on specific rooms that offer better light control

Can I Use My Drone at the Resort?

In most cases, no. Sandals has a policy against drones for the privacy and safety of all guests. You may be able to get special permission for weddings or professional shoots, but you’ll need to request it in advance, and approval is not guaranteed.

Will I Miss Out by Not Booking Butler Level?

This is a question we get all the time, and the answer really depends on your travel style.

If you:

  • Want the best rooms on the property with the most amenities (private pool, privacy)

  • Like a fully personalized experience

  • Want the best dining times without waiting

  • Appreciate poolside service, 24-hour room service, and a private check-in

  • Are you celebrating something special (honeymoon, anniversary, proposal)

…then Butler Level is absolutely worth the upgrade.

But if you:

  • Prefer a more low-key trip

  • Plan to spend most of your day exploring or at the beach

  • Don’t need help managing details or dining

…then Club or even Luxury Level may suit you just fine. We’ve had happy clients at every level.

And remember: the quality of service at Sandals is high across the board, and you won’t feel left out. Still unsure?

That’s exactly the kind of conversation we have with our clients during the planning process. We’ll help you choose the room category that fits you, not just the price tag.
