Sandals Grande Antigua Review: The World's Most Romantic Resort

Sandals Antigua Beach

As travel experts specializing in Sandals resorts for over 15 years, we've been fortunate to have visited all of their properties and were grateful to be invited back to hear about recent updates and happenings.

Today, we will share our insider tips to help you decide if this is a top contender for your next getaway. In short, if you don't read anything past this first sentence, I'm pleased to report that it's still one of our top destinations - so go! :)

In this Sandals Grande Antigua review, we're going to take a stroll through this beautiful property without getting too deep into the details while making sure we give you all of the highlights inside of an eight-minute read.

OK, let's get started!

It's been a few years since we've come home to Sandals Grande Antigua, and while this was our fourth trip here, there have been some positive changes, but a lot is still the same, which makes this a great option for those looking to "soon come back", as they say at Sandals.

From the moment our plane touched down, we felt the island’s energy and welcomed the gentle breezes as we walked down the stairs onto the tarmac and to the immigration area. After grabbing our bags, we stepped outside into the salty air and met an agent from Sandals, who tagged our bags and arranged our transfer to the resort.

Arrival & First Impressions:

Getting to the Resort

Let’s get the business out of the way first: If you’re wondering how far Sandals Grande Antigua is from the airport, it’s only about a 20-minute ride through relatively flat terrain, so no one will get car sick on this part of the journey.

Back to arrivals: When we pulled up to the resort, the staff welcomed us "home" and escorted us to the front desk of the open-air lobby at the Mediterranean Village. Coincidentally, they recognized us from last time, which was a nice personal touch.

While completing the check-in on an iPad, the staff handed us a refreshing towel infused with their signature lemongrass scent and a glass of champagne. This is the life!

Check-in Experience

Having previously stayed in the Caribbean Beachfront Village, on this trip, we were given the opportunity to stay on the Mediterranean side with those epic ocean views. Once the standard deposit of $400 was processed for incidental charges at the Red Lane spa or for Island Routes for excursions, we were escorted to our Mediterranean Club Level Suite (VS1), room 7521.

Upon entry, we were given a brief tour of the large bathroom, which featured marble countertops, a soaking tub, and a rain shower. As with all Sandals, the room was appointed with a four-post king-sized bed and a small balcony overlooking Dickenson Bay. Part of me wished the balcony was larger, but it was definitely big enough for Angela and me.

After the room tour, the Club Sandals agent confirmed our dinner reservations at Ok Corral and Kimonos. Then, we stopped at Dino's Pizza for a snack. So far, so good!

Why Is Sandals Grande Antigua Resort Our #2 Pick for Best Sandals Resort?

Having experienced this resort many times, I can confidently say why it earns a top spot from both on Trip Advisor and from our clients.

  1. Two Villages: This resort is special because of the contrast between the tropical charm of the Caribbean Village and the sweeping ocean views at the Mediterranean Oceanview Village.

  2. Of the 365 beaches in Antigua, Dickenson Bay Beach is one of the best in the Caribbean. Its calm water and picture-perfect sunsets make it one of the best on the island.

  3. The Mediterranean Village is set behind the main pool but is only a few minutes' walk from the beach.

  4. The beach is beautiful but not very wide on the Mediterranean side, further down towards the Caribbean Village it opens up and there is plenty of space to spread out and enjoy yourself.

  5. While Antigua is not necessarily known for its scuba diving, it is a fun activity with some great spots. One thing to note. Unlike other Resorts, Sandals Antigua does not have a dock, so you need to wade through the water to get on and off the boat.

  6. Plenty of day beds and pool lounges are around the pools and on the beach.

  7. The Red Lane Spa is exceptional in every way. We love their lavender scalp massages. If you make this your vacation destination, you must visit them!

  8. We love the Piano Bar in the evening. It's a great place to sing songs, chat with other guests and make new friends.

  9. If you’re considering a Destination Wedding at Sandals Grande Antigua or vow renewal, the wedding team is professional and committed to ensuring your vision is delivered.

  10. Photographers are on site and available to set up a complimentary photo session.

  11. Shade on the beach is limited, as there are no umbrellas, only Palapas. If you don’t have butler service, you might need to get up early to secure the best spot with shade.

  12. There are vendors on the beach, but they are friendly, and a polite “no, thank you” is enough to send them away.

  13. Some rooms on the Caribbean side have been updated, and others are being refurbished. Not sure which room to pick? We're here to help!

  14. If you are not in a Butler level room, please book your dinner reservations when you arrive as the best time slots tend to fill quickly.

  15. Antigua has a lot to do. We have rented a car on multiple occasions and enjoy exploring the island independently. If you’re interested, Contact us today for more information, and let us use our expertise to plan your personalized vacation to paradise!

For our clients—and any guest readers—this is a Caribbean getaway in Saint John Parish, Antigua. To get here, you'll fly into V. C. Bird International Airport (ANU), take the resort’s shuttle, and arrive in under half an hour.

Accommodation Options at Sandals Grande Antigua

Caribbean Grove (Caribbean Village)

The Caribbean Beachfront Village is the original building of this resort, so it's the place to be if you want an authentic island feel. Most rooms are just steps from the beach, and walkout room categories are even closer.

Our favorite is the Caribbean Honeymoon Beachfront Grande Luxe Club Level Room on the beach overlooking the beautiful blue waters. Also, it's worth mentioning that the air conditioning is reliably strong in the rooms, which I appreciate when returning from a day in the sun.

Mediterranean Village (Mediterranean side)

If you're wondering about the differences between the Caribbean and Mediterranean Villages, that's a good question. On this side of the resort, there is a more modern and upscale ambiance, with an Italian restaurant and large pool.

The best views are from the upper floors, and there are elevators, so we recommend the Mediterranean Honeymoon Oceanview Club Level Suite, which starts at $433.00 per person per night, or the Mediterranean Oceanview Penthouse One-Bedroom Butler Suite, which starts at $633 per person per night.

Private villas, such as the Mediterranean One-Bedroom Butler Villas, with private plunge pools are also available. These villas start at $889.00 per person per night and offer the most privacy while close to the beach. You also get access to an upgraded room service menu with 24-hour service.

As a travel advisor, I’d recommend the Mediterranean side to couples who want a slightly more formal vibe for a special occasion, such as a destination wedding. However, the beachfront Rondovals are also great options in the Caribbean Village.

Sandals Grande Antigua Excursions

When visiting Antigua, you have to get off the resort to experience one or more of their many beaches. This is a safe island that we've rented a car at many times. If you decide to rent a car, we can help, and it can be dropped off at the resort and picked up from there at the end of the day.

Antigua is known for its 365 white sand beaches, one for every day of the year, so we encourage you to explore. One of the most popular excursions in Antigua is the sunset party at Nelson’s Dockyard and Shirley Heights. The views here are incredible, and you need to experience them.

Having booked destination weddings for clients at Sandals Grande Antigua, this Caribbean resort is one of our favorite locations as there are multiple beachfront areas and private gazebos for a garden ceremony.

At the highest level, this adults-only all-inclusive resort offers complimentary wedding packages with stays of three nights or more. These packages include a dedicated on-site wedding planner, bouquet, boutonniere, and a beautiful ceremony setup.

If interested, you can upgrade the packages to include custom décor, photography, and private receptions. Special deals often include free nights, discounts on group bookings starting with five rooms, and honeymoon perks like a turndown service and a private candlelight dinner.

Additional Tips and Considerations

  • Shaded Beach Spots: Mornings can get busy, so if you want a good beachfront location, grab a shaded lounge early in the morning.

  • Room Rates: Look for best deals or last-minute promotions through certified Sandals Travel Agents (like us) or the official Sandals site.

  • Sandals Grande Antigua Day Pass: Sometimes, if you’re on a cruise or staying elsewhere, you can grab a day pass to experience the resort.

  • Small Pool vs. Main Pool: If you're looking for a more private spot, check out the smaller pools in the Caribbean Village. Note: hot tubs on both sides of the resorts are attached to the larger pools in each village.

  • Nightly Entertainment: Theme nights can include a “white night” or local music, so ask for the week’s schedule.

Insider Tips for Booking Sandals Grande Antigua

  • Ground Floor or Upper Floors: The Caribbean Village rooms only have first and second floors with no elevators. On the Mediterranean side, it's a seven-story building with stairs and elevators. The best views will be from the upper floors, but we love the walkouts too.

  • Club Sandals Lounge: If you choose a Club Level Room, you’ll have a private lounge with snacks and drinks, as well as concierge assistance to help with tour bookings and dinner reservations. Club Level rooms offer room service from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

  • Sandals Select Rewards: If you’ve visited Sandals Resort before, sign up for these loyalty perks and earn points for your free week after 70 nights!

Sandals Grande Antigua and How it Compares to Other Sandals Resorts

We've advised clients on every resort from Sandals Barbados to more intimate locations in St. Lucia. Of the 17 resorts in the portfolio, Sandals Antigua consistently stands out for its laid-back vibe, coupled with the liveliness of the resort. This is a sprawling property, meaning there’s space for a quiet moment with the one you love and a bustling social scene for those days where you'll make new friends.

In short, it’s a perfect spot for repeat guests who want new experiences and familiar comforts.
